JOB TITLE: Security Officer

DEPARTMENT: Security Services

REPORTS TO: Shift Commander, Supervisor, Manager, Associate Director, and Director

SCHEDULE: 4 pm to 12 am

SALARY: $21/Hr

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Security Officer is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, staff, faculty, visitors, and property at the School of Visual Arts (SVA). The role involves monitoring activities, responding to emergencies, and maintaining a visible presence to deter unlawful actions.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Follow and carry out all instructions of the shift supervisors or other security management.
  • Detect unusual circumstances and/or suspicious individuals
  • Detects defective doors, windows, locks, lights, and fire safety equipment while making periodic checks of the entire building.
  • Respond quickly to emergency calls, alarms, disturbances and potentially hazardous conditions and/or activities.
  • Deter unlawful entry onto the premises by undesirables and individuals with negative intentions.
  • Deter smoking on the premises and the perpetration of unlawful acts against the College and its community such as vandalism, burglaries, assaults etc.
  • Report to supervisors all activities or observances that would or could allow harm to the people or property of the school or interfere with the duties and responsibilities of an officer.
  • Be presentable in a neat & clean uniform when stationed at a point of entry to a building/premises.
  • Provide necessary information to visitors and affiliates of the College such as directions and location of facilities, at all times displaying an acceptable degree of respect, professionalism, courtesy and tolerance
  • Provide constant vigil on surveillance equipment (CCTV monitors) and alarms.
  • Log in entries in daily activity log book every hour or upon the occurrence of irregular/abnormal situations/circumstances
  • Gather date, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Provides meal relief for one hour to other security officers as needed

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • None

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School diploma or an equivalent education
  • NYS Security Guard License
  • Fluent in English
  • Ability to work weekends and holidays
  • Ability to work night shifts or overnight
  • Ability to work over-time

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

  • NYS Security Guard License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • 2+ years of security-related experience
  • 1+ years of customer service experience
  • Able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Ability to walk and stand for extended periods, with frequent patrols of the premises.
  • Capacity to respond rapidly during emergencies, covering long distances if necessary.
  • Ability to ascend and descend stairs regularly.
  • Must be able to lift objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to monitor surveillance equipment (CCTV) and assess surroundings effectively.
  • Primarily indoors, with potential outdoor duties in various weather conditions.
  • Shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays, requiring flexibility.
  • Continuous alertness is necessary to detect suspicious activities or emergencies.Exposure to potentially stressful situations requiring quick thinking and decisive action.
  • Ability to remain awake and attentive during long shifts, especially during night hours
